Switzerland Diaries: Reaching Basel from New Delhi.

Located in the city where Roger Federer was born is a little company called Novartis whose revenue is 6 times as much as our TCS. (Yes “little” was a sardonic remark) and which basically sells medicine. My “real” brother got a job in that company last year and so thanks to him, I finally got to go outside of India after a long period of 24 years. While there is much more to be explored, I like what I see in Switzerland so far.

As you’ve, very likely, seen in the movies, yes the place is very very clean. However, it is not as chilly as you’d expect it to be in the summers. Compared to Indian hill stations it’s no where close anyway. It is right now 7:30 PM and it is as bright as our 4:30PM.

Interesting Kissa about our departure

After meeting my friend Anand Das and making him pay for the dinner (he got through IIM-L so he has to give a “few” parties), I rushed to my place, answered a few mails, jerked off, took a shower,  got into the taxi, went to the IGI airport where dad had a jugaad and we met one of his colleagues from the customs department. My father is one rank above him in seniority and as it turned out, the guy actually had another “protocol” duty to attend to. His other “duty” was to take care of a young couple 2-3 ranks above him (which means about 1-2 ranks above my dad). They were probably in their late twenties or in early thirties. One of them was a fat bitch. Logically, the officer should have taken better care of that particular couple since they were 2-3 ranks above him and dad is just one rank above him even though he’s nearly 56! That wasn’t to be and I didn’t call her a fat bitch for no reason. For she was no cow!

While dad was polite throughout with the officer-didn’t ask him to pick up our luggage (something they hate to do), and kept telling him not to bother too much- the young officers wanted him to give them a VIP treatment. It was a funny site, when they kept waiting for the officer to put their luggage on the x-ray machine and he, basically, ignored them-thereby subtly telling them “GMBC”-forcing them to lift the heavy burden themselves, both of the luggage and of the canon balls that put huge dents on their egos.  After getting out, it was time to wait for the boarding. The officer took us both to this place in the IGI terminal 3 where normally you are not allowed to go, unless you probably have a “fuss-class ki tikat” (Bragging). Since the young couple had made their irritation to the officer quite clear, the officer was pissed with them already and so he took them to this place where they sat in a normal lounge. After settling them down, he came back to us and made us sit in the next lounge which was by sheer coincidence, the premium lounge. While I was sitting there and the officer was bitching about the couple with my dad, the lady, with the dented ego came on the threshold of the premium lounge and entered it after staring inside for a while.

After 5 minutes, I saw her coming out of the lounge with the officer explaining to her that me and my dad were paying to stay in the premium lounge!  (Bwaahahahahaha).

We boarded the flight, I watched many episodes of “Friends” on it. Then I ate something non veg, drank wine, slept, woke up by the queue for the toilet right in front of me, had breakfast (something nonveg again. It was probably chicken but who knows). We landed at the Zurich airport.

Super Friendly People Who  Can’t Speak Much English

The people of Switzerland are some of the most friendly people in the world and that is probably why Switzerland never gets involved in any of the world’s conflicts and has managed to do so for so many centuries. (It became a member of the UN only in 2002). After getting out of the airport, we needed to board a train which would take us to Basel (This is the place my brother lives and where Roger Federer was born). Thanks to my dad’s paranoia about doing things way ahead of time, we boarded a train which had come 15 minutes earlier than the schedule and inside we realized we had made a mistake. We tried to ask an old lady if the train was going to Basel but she had no clue what we were talking about. Sitting across was an old man who then explained to us what we were supposed to do after getting down at the next stop. Perhaps another man had heard us and had understood we had made a mistake. So when we got down at the next station, he approached us and gave us a little note about train timings and everything.  Because you realize that many people in Switzerland can’t speak or understand English, you start hesitating while approaching people lest they should make you feel like an idiot (which they never do) who doesn’t understand the local language. Overcoming those fears, I asked some people about buying the tickets back to the Zurich station (yeah we did something super retarded and had no other choice but to go back to Zurich and then take another train to Basel from there) , purchased the tickets and got us on the right train to Basel.

And so we finally reached Basel, a city which reminds you of a nice hill station in India, with half the population though and very good looking and very friendly people (who wait for you while you cross the road using the zebra crossing).
